Description:      Perennial fructose herbage plant, the hollow stem is height of 1.5~2m in average, and with red or fuchasia spot on the surface. The leaves are broad oval with a truncated base, 7~14cm long and 5~12cm broad, with an entire margin. The panicle is axillary, and the dioecious flower has 5 calyxes, comb shaped style; the achene is oval shaped with 3 edges. Florescence is from June to July, and the fruit period is from September to October.

              

Traditional Usage: The roots of Polygonum cuspidatum are used in traditional Chinese herbal medicines as a natural laxative. The active principle responsible for the laxative effect is emodin, present in its natural form as a complex of its analogs.
