High Pressure Mercury Lamp fixtures are available in various sizes, from small 150-watt outdoor bulbs to the powerful 1,000-watt bulbs that are used in large-scale hydroponic gardening. Even at high wattage, High Pressure Mercury Lamp bulbs are smaller than metal halide bulbs, making them a convenient option for gardens in small spaces.

The main problem with High Pressure Mercury  lighting is the amount of heat produced. This is not usually an issue for outdoor use, but can be devastating inside a hydroponic gardening setup. The garden area must be well ventilated and may even require cooling fans to keep the temperature down. This is especially important in areas where it is hot in the summer. It will be even more difficult to keep your indoor temperature under control when it is so much hotter outside. Because the light emitted by a High Pressure Mercury  bulb is mostly on the reddish end of the spectrum, it can cause plants in the vegetative growth phase to sprawl out.

Plants exposed to these balanced lights will not stretch out as much as those grown entirely under a standard High Pressure Mercury  bulb.
