SD Card is Secure Digital Card, and it was launched by Panasonic, Toshiba and SanDisk. It was released for the first time in August 1999.They founded Secure Digital Association(SDA) on February 1st 2000 with more than 90 member companies including IBM,Microsoft,Motorola,NEC,Samsung etc. SD Card data transmission and physical specifications evolved from MMC,and the size is similar to MMC. The size is 32mm x 24mm x 2.1mm, the length is the same as MMC. 0.7mm thicker holds storage unit with larger capacity. SD card and MMC card are maintaining upward compatibility, that is to say, MMC can be deposited by new SD equipment. The compatibility is decided by the application software, but SD card can not be deposited by MMC equipment.(SD card outlook has used with the same thickness of MMC guide rail type design to enable the SD equipment to be suitable for MMC)The SD connection besides retains MMC 7 needles, but also added 2 more needles at each side as the data line. Using NAND Flash Memory, basically the same as SmartMedia, averaged data transfer rate can achieve 2MB/s.
