The rollers of NN design cylindrical rollerbearings are guided between integral flangeson the inner ring, while the rollers of NNU designbearings are guided between integral flanges onthe outer ring. In either case, the other ring hasno flanges. Therefore, the bearing can accommodateaxial displacement of the shaft relativeto the housing in both directions, within thebearing.

These bearings are separable, i.e. the bearingring with integral flanges, together with theroller and cage assembly can be separated fromthe flangeless ring, to facilitate mounting anddismounting.

NN design bearings can provide a uniquebalance between load carrying capacity, rigidityand speed and are therefore typically used asthe drive end bearing in machine tool spindles.Boundary dimensions of NN design bearingsare in accordance with ISO DimensionSeries 30 (NN 30 series designation).

Double row cylindrical roller bearings areavailable with either a cylindrical or a taperedbore (taper 1:12). In machine tool applications,cylindrical roller bearings with a tapered boreare preferred, because the taper enables moreaccurate adjustment of clearance or preloadduring installation.
