Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings were developed in order to meet the steadily growing demands for accuracy and performance of machine tool work spindles.
Double direction angular contact ball bearings are able to locate a spindle axially in both directions and are designed for use together with double row cylindrical roller bearings of series NN 30 K. They have the same bore and outside diameters as the cylindrical roller bearings. The outside diameter of the housing washer is, however, made to tolerances such that sufficient radial clearance will be obtained to the housing bore seating which is common to the thrust bearing and the cylindrical roller bearing. This is to ensure that the thrust bearing is only subjected to axial loads. An additional benefit is that the machining of the housing bore is simplified.
Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings are of separable design. They have a one-piece housing washer, two cages with a large number of balls and two shaft washers separated by a spacer sleeve. After mounting, the bearings are preloaded. There are three series of these bearings: 2344(00), 2349(00),2347(00).
Bearings of series 2344(00) have a contact angle of 60°, the same bore diameter as bearings of series NN 30 K, and are intended for mounting at the side of the cylindrical roller bearing with the smaller diameter (tapered bore). Bearings of series 2347(00) have slightly larger bore diameters than those of series 2344(00) and are intended for mounting at the large diameter side of the tapered seating. They, too, have a contact angle of 60°. The preload, the 60°contact angle and the large number of balls in each ball and cage assembly impart high axial stiffness to the angular contact thrust ball bearings and designed cages make the bearing suitable for relatively high speed operation.
